5 QUESTIONS : ERIC KOSTON (2/2)

(Version française en bas)
You’d be surprised to learn that Eric Koston is the link between Charlie Chaplin and GG Allin and that he contributed to a movie that got a Oscar.

GGKostonEK Allin

In the beginning of your part in Yeah Right!, you look pretty pissed at a guy who’s broken in your car but I was never sure about this being serious or not. Is this a true story ?
Yeah it was a true story, a junkie had broken into our rental van and also two other cars right next to it.  My wallet and cell phone were in the glove compartment and I saw that I was missing. A neighbor had seen the junkie break into the cars and pointed it out to me. So I chased him down and the camera got turned on. It wasn’t planned and instinct and impulse took over, went right back to normal when I got my wallet and phone back.

“I GOT INTO GG ALLIN WHEN I WAS 14”

More than 10 years later, I guess we can reveal to the world that it’s not Owen Wilson bluntsliding that rail in Yeah Right! but you ! Was Wilson into skateboarding at all ?
Owen Wilson was not into skateboarding, he did that as a favor to Spike Jonze. Spike and Ty Evans wrote a script for Owen Wilson and he took the time to rehearse it and he watched some skate videos for reference, just to see how skateboarders talked and wanted to sound like a skateboarder. He actually postponed because he said he wasn’t ready for the role, we thought he was just flaking but then he came when he was good and nailed it.

What about Charlie Chaplin in Mouse ? Did you chose that role because you had nothing to say ?
That was another Spike idea, so all I did was watch 45 minutes of a Chaplin move, I’d seen some before but just refreshed myself on him, then went out and shot it. Spike was a big help in directing me on all the nuances of Chaplin.

I have to say that seeing you dressed up as GG Allin in Chomp on this was a big surprise. Any memories of it ?
I got into GG Allin probably when I was 14, when all the stuff you heard about him doing was more a rumor and myth and it turned out that it was real, older skaters and friends told me about him. Around that time in Chomp I was really into his documentary Hated, Steve Hernandez and I always made GG jokes.

Steve Berra played in some series, Paul Rodriguez in movies, what about you ? You must have been asked to play at least your own role in  some movie !
I was in Her an Oscar winning movie, ha ha ! Also in the remake the Point Break. You can’t even find it but I was in a really bad TV show called Sk8, that was so bad. Other skateboarders did episodes too, McCrank, Colin McKay and Muska. Those would be pretty funny to pull up now. I’ve tried to find them but no luck.
